WoSTTL Hosts Free Table Tennis Taster Event for People with Physical Disabilities

The West of Scotland Table Tennis League (WoSTTL) is hosting a Free Disability Table Tennis Taster Event on November 9th. This is a pop-in event, specifically for individuals with physical disabilities, and no prior experience is required.

Research has shown that individuals with physical disabilities often have fewer opportunities to engage in sports. This event aims to address that gap by providing a platform for participants to try table tennis in a supportive environment with qualified coaches and engaging games.

It’s fantastic to see WoSTTL leading this initiative with the support of Scottish Disability Sport and Glasgow Life, both of whom are dedicated to creating more opportunities for people with physical disabilities to participate in and compete in sport. Additionally, it’s inspiring to note that GB superstar Martin Perry, who was born in Paisley and recently competed in the Paralympics in France, is currently one of the top players in the WoSTTL 1st division, representing Drumchapel, one of the leading clubs in the west. His achievements serve as a huge inspiration for players looking to take up table tennis.

Iain Rhind, the WoSTTL volunteer development officer leading the project, stated, “On looking at the development challenges in the West area, I recognised we really needed to make our sport more inclusive, and creating opportunities for disabled people to take up the game is one step forward in this direction. I’d like to thank Fraser from Disability Sport Glasgow, Grant from Glasgow Life, and Cammy from TTS for their contributions in driving this project forward. We hope to have a busy taster event and plan to establish a weekly session very soon after.”

Moreover, it is great to see WoSTTL utilising the Table Tennis Scotland (TTS) Development Project funding award to run such a fantastic project. Additionally, Glasgow Life has generously provided funding to cover the hall hire, ensuring that there is no cost to participation, which is instrumental in breaking down barriers for those wanting to engage in sport.
