North of Scotland Open Championships

North of Scotland Open Championships – Saturday 20 September 2025

ADTTA would sincerely like to thank all players, coaches and families for supporting the recent North Open Championships. Although the entry was affected by a couple of other events taking place over the weekend there were plenty of competitive and exciting matches for spectators to enjoy.

The main winners on the day were Danny Bajwa and Wei Wei Lui who dominated the Men’s and Ladies Singles events respectively. Danny was looking to retain the title and lift the prestigious Rubber Shop Trophy and duly did so with ease as most of the players he would have expected to have faced along the way were involved in British League. Yubo Rasmussen was delighted to take the runners up prize while two Aberdeen players, Joe Abbott and Ben Stewart were semi-finalists. Wei Wei Liu was in impressive form, easing through her matches without losing an end, with Ilona Obst-Wojcicka runner up.

In other events, Rory Thomson recorded a double success taking both the Junior and Cadet Boys titles. Rory’s toughest match in the Junior Boys came in the semi final where he came from 2-1 down to defeat Victor Chen 16-14 in the deciding end. Rory then went on to defeat Ben Stewart in the final. In the Cadet Boys semi’s, Rory saw off Leo Stakim while the Aberdeen duo of Dean Robertson and Victor fought out another five set encounter with Victor eventually winning 11-7 in the fifth. The final saw Rory and Victor battle it out again with Rory coming through 12-10 in the fifth end. The Minor Boys was played as a group with Inniyan Jayaraj and Leo Stakim both unbeaten going into the final match. Leo took a two set lead however perhaps home advantage helped Inniyan as he won the next three games to take the title.

All the girls’ events were played as groups with the final match in the Junior Girls being an all Aberdeen clash between Maja Wojcicka and Kiishi Adekola. In a very closely fought encounter, Maja won the first two ends before Kiishi levelled to take the match into a decider, Maja eventually winning 11-8. Alexandra Hart was dominant in the Cadet Girls winning all her matches without dropping an end with Anne Chan taking second place. The Minor Girls title went to Mariah Cassino with Lucy Stakim runner up.

The Under 40’s event proved competitive with Joe Abbott delighted to defeat Wei Wei Liu 3-2 in the semi final. Joe then went on to face his old friend Yubo Rasmussen in the final who capped a fine day by taking the title 3-1. The Over 40’s semi’s featured all Aberdeen players with both matches going the distance. Ikenna Asogwa defeated his clubmate Gregor Ksiazek while Uwe Petermann saw off Dennis Oon. The final saw another five set match with Uwe eventually coming through 11-6 in the decider. Joy Daniels took the title in the Over 60’s with Brian Robertson having to settle for the silver medal.

For the first time we used Stadium software to run the event and, despite a little trepidation initially, thanks to the assistance of Gordon Muir at the control table all seemed to go smoothly. All the results from the day can be seen on stadiumcompete.com. Thanks also go to Gordon for taking some great action photos on the day.

Finally, thanks go once again to Phil McCallum and Tees Sport for their continued support of our event, to Charlie Flint for assuming the role of referee, and the ADTTA members who helped set up the hall on Friday night which meant we were able to start on time on Saturday morning.
